At Amesbury School, we weave te reo Māori into our daily learning, and we encourage whānau (families) to join us at home too. Here are some simple ways you can support your child's learning:
Greet each other with kia ora (hello) or mōrena (good morning).
Use phrases such as kai time! (food time!) or haere mai! (come in!) around the home.
Learn your pepeha (your family’s story of where you are from) together.
Listen to waiata Māori (Māori songs) or watch a show on Māori Television.
Play a game by swapping English words for Māori ones you know, like colours, numbers, or body parts.
You can also use these encouraging words:
Ka pai! – Good job!
Kia kaha! – Be strong! / You can do it!
Mīharo! – Amazing!
Every little bit helps—ahakoa he iti, he pounamu (although it is small, it is precious).
