Our learning
Wellington Museum’s Mouri Tāngata, Mouri Ora | Matiu Somes programme sets ākonga up for independent exploration of Matiu Somes Island. The programme explores the significance of Matiu Somes to mana whenua, experiences of loss and return, and the diverse histories of the motu.
In our current Inquiry module, we have been looking at different types of maps, where places are located locally and nationally, how to get to and from locations, and how settlements change over time. As such, our trip to Matiu Somes Island will allow ākonga to plan and experience, in person, a number of aspects of this inquiry e.g. the transport, route, distance & time from school to the island, where the island is in relation to other places in the harbour, how and why its use has changed over the years.
Timings and cost
9:30am start at Wellington Museum for a 1.5hr session.
11.30am departure from Queens Wharf. 2.5hrs on the island.
2pm departure from Matiu Wharf, arriving back at around 2:25pm at Queens Wharf.
We hope to be back by 3pm, though it may be a little after 3pm.
The cost of the trip will be $24 per ākonga. This covers the cost of the Wellington Museum programme, and the return ferry and bus transport costs. This cost will be added to your child's Kindo account.
Further details to follow will include:
The time to arrive at school for bus departure.
Items the students will need to bring with them.
