Emergency Evacuation Practices

By: Jenny King | Posted Friday November 7, 2025

As part of our school's emergency management plan, we run practices throughout the year to ensure all staff and students are aware of safety procedures in the event of an emergency evacuation or reverse evacuation (lock down).  In keeping with our commitment to continuous improvement and ensuring safe, practical and effective systems, a review is done each time (with any revisions made), and reported to the School Board.

For a situation requiring closure of the school during a school day, Amesbury School has two procedures for reunification (safely reuniting children with their families).

  1. School initiated - emerging, known situation

  2. Civil Defence - urgent, unexpected event

We have documented procedures for both emergency situations and the next emergency evacuation practice we will be doing is a school initiated emergency reunification involving students, staff and caregivers. With school recently being closed for 2 days, only 5 weeks left of this term, and it generally being a busy time for families, we feel it may be expecting too much to also do an early afternoon pickup, so will run the practice in Term 1 next year. The proposed for this is the afternoon of Thursday 5 February 2026. More information will follow closer to the time.

Be prepared for an emergency reunification situation ...

More information will be provided closer to the practice, however, if an emergency evacuation situation happens before then, primary caregivers will receive text and HERO messages, clearly stating the situation and action required e.g. text

Due to weather Amesbury closing. Students to be collected by listed contacts only.  Go to hub/whānau space to sign out students

Please ensure information is up-to-date!

  • primary caregiver mobile numbers (they receive the text)

  • emergency contacts (local people who can pick up your child in the event that you are unable to) - students are only released to primary caregivers or people that are listed on HERO as emergency contacts

Key things to know: the name of your child's whānau teacher, the hub/space they are based in, and where it's located.

Please email Rachel at office@amesbury.school.nz to check or change contact details and emergency contacts.
