Trip to the Wellington Museum

Over the past two weeks our tamariki and kaiako have been going to the Wellington Museum to learn about the history of Aotearoa. We had the lovely staff take us on a guided tour, exploring stories, myths and legends. We got into a history time machine, and listened to stories of the demigod Maui.

Our tamariki have been recently learning about Kupe, the great explorer, how he chased the giant wheke (octopus) and when his wife Kūrāmarotini discovered New Zealand. Our facilitators had a wealth of knowledge to add to their learning. It was awesome to see our tamariki answering pātai (questions) and getting involved.

Although we had to cancel the ferry trip to Matiu Island, we got to learn a lot about the history of the Island and the earliest arrival of Māori iwi to the island. We looked at a bird's eye view map of the Wellington Harbour. This and the huge ground floor map downstairs meant we could visualise where we were going in real time.

We want to say a huge thank you to our parents who came along to help keep things running smoothly, we appreciate your support.
