Share and Celebrate Week 6

By: Urs Cunningham | Posted Thursday August 21, 2025

Our Share & Celebrate event is a fantastic way to recognize the wonderful things our students are doing, both in and outside of school. We love highlighting how they live out our Amesbury High Five values, whether it's by being a kind friend, putting in great effort with their schoolwork, achieving success in their chosen activities or sports, or helping to keep our environment clean.

If your child has an out-of-school achievement you would like to celebrate, please email the details to their whānau teacher. We would love to include it!

A special thanks to our student leaders, Reyaansh and Jaden for organizing and running this event. Ka pai!

The first shout out goes to a large group of students who ensured that a visitor to our school felt very welcome and being at Amesbury was the highlight of their day! I received this email:

"I just wanted to share some positive feedback, and all of it happened within the first five minutes of my arrival today!

When I arrived after lunch, a ball had rolled into the car park. A group of boys asked very politely if I could help them collect it, and then about five of them individually thanked me afterwards, such beautiful manners! As I left the office, another boy held the door open for me. Soon after, I came across a group of girls who were proudly telling me about the kind things they had been doing for their peers.

It was such a lovely snapshot of the school’s culture and a real highlight of my day."

If you were one of those students, thank you so much for being a great role model and demonstrating the Amesbury High 5 Values!

Well done to you all for fabulous achievements at the recent chess competitions.

John, Ella H, Kyle D, Jaden W: Jaden and Kyle competed in the Wellington Central Regional competition, and Jaden paced third.

Jaden, Kyle, John and Ella all competed in the Hutt Valley Regional competition. Jaden placed second and John placed third, and all players were awarded a Distinction recognition.

Ella was the youngest player and won 5 of her 7 rounds against much older players. She won the Best Girl award and qualified for the Champions Trophy in October. Our team secured the top place and secured another spot in the National competition.

Kyle has been very determined to qualify for the Chess Power Champions Trophy held in Auckland later this year. He has competed in a number of competitions recently, and qualified third, earning him a spot in the Champions competition. Ka mau te wehi, awesome work, team! We are so proud of you all.

Sophia P and Victoria P: Well done for being so inclusive in the sandpit. You have been ensuring that younger and newer ākonga feel welcome and are able to join in and play with you. Super work being tuakana and good role models for others.

Miesha: Miesha has been achieving fabulous results in her rugby this year.

With her team, ParePlimm Junior Rugby Club, Miesha won the ‘Best Attitude’ award this year for her Y6 team. She has also been selected to represent ParePlimm year 6 team in the Taupo Global Games this year, and will represent Wahine Toa- Wellington Junior Girls Rugby, in the NZ Junior Girls Rugby Festival

Miesha has also picked up Rugby league this year, playing for the Wainuiomata Lions under 11 Junior league team. Through this, she earned a spot on the Hutt Valley Rep League team, where she earned the Player of the Day award in her first game last week.

Miesha has also been selected for the Nga Hau E Wha O Wainuiomata under 11 Whanau traveling to Rotorua on the for the Aotearoa NZ Māori League Tamariki Tournament, and the Wainuiomata Lions under 10s traveling to Queenstown for the Junior League Festival

Wow, what an amazing set of achievements! Miesha has shown discipline, commitment, and eagerness to strive to be the best she can be. We are super proud of her efforts, and we wish you all the best in all of your upcoming competitions.

John, Adam, Bella H, Hanson, Zachary, Jaden W: Huge well done on competing in the Mathswell Maths competition this week, representing Amesbury School. You competed against 44 other schools, and did fantastically well, placing second overall.

Last year our Amesbury School placed third, and you were determined to beat your own record - well done, you did it!

Peyton and Micke: Ngā mihi for coming and reorganizing our chrome book station. You are not even in our whānau group, but you saw the need for it to be sorted out and went ahead and did a fabulous job of neatly fixing the cables and plugs. Thank you, you are both amazing!

Aaliyah: Tino pai Aaliyah, you have been working really hard on your writing! We have been really impressed with how you are showing an improvement in your growth mindset to overcome the things you find challenging about writing. You have been working on stretching your sentences to include more detail, using support materials and checking your writing. We are really proud of you! Keep up the great work!

Andy T: You have been working so hard in all of your learning. Also, a huge ngā mihi to you for your effort in always keeping our classroom tidy, jumping up to volunteer and help kaiako whenever they need. Ka rawe e koe keep it up!

Oscar H: We are really impressed by how you have settled into using Te Reo Māori. You are quick to have a go and attempt new kupu (words). Well done. We were also impressed to see you trying to help a friend with their work last week. They were having difficulty knowing where to start and you tried to help by numbering the steps they should take. We liked the systematic way that you helped. It showed real Manaakitanga. This is a te ao Māori concept which encompasses the act of showing respect, generosity, and care for others, to nurture relationships. Ka rawe Oscar.

Mumu: Mumu you have just joined Amesbury School a couple of weeks ago and you have settled into Lauren’s whānau and Koru hub really well. You go above and beyond making sure all ākonga are signed in before the bell rings. Keep up the great work Mumu!

Kandhan: You have been showing amazing perseverance in our maths sessions. When something is tricky you use your problem-solving abilities, and do not give up. It is amazing to see your dedication to your learning, Kandhan. Ka rawe!

Johann: We want to give a shout out to Johann for his hard work after his conference. We talked together about an important goal he is working on, and we have noticed that he has immediately tried really hard to meet that goal. Tino pai Johann for listening to feedback and taking steps towards your goal.

Basti: Basti is our fabulous weta saver! At swimming on Thursday Basti spotted a weta inside in the corner. He carefully carried it outside and put it very thoughtfully in some plants, even though he was a little bit cautious around handling the weta. Fabulous work being a caring kaitiaki guardian, Basti.

Andy X: We want to celebrate Andy, a student who showed amazing manaakitanga—kindness and compassion—to his peers. Andy helped others on two separate occasions. One, when he comforted a peer who was upset and cold, and two, he showed great aroha (empathy) by checking in on another peer who was feeling left out of a game. Thank you, Andy, for being such a wonderful role model and for showing us all what it means to be a kind friend.

Hashem: Ka rawe on showing great responsibility in your mahi (work), especially in your reading follow up Hashem. You took accountability in making sure you were completing your work on time, handing it in, and you made sure you were providing high quality answers in your book and in our discussions. You also bring so much scientific knowledge in our workshops and enthusiastically share words that have many, many syllables that become a tongue teaser for me! Keep up the mahi Hashem!

Ollie: We've noticed the way that you've become a kaitiaki and role model in class. You've consistently shown the initiative to tidy up the class, whether its maths books or the blue matting equipment. You've been setting such an amazing example for the other students Ollie, ka pai!

Inaya: In class this week, we have had a student who has been missing home, and you have been showing amazing care and kindness towards them and have taken them under your wing. You've been playing with them during break times, being their learning buddy and helping them talk to teachers when they feel sad. Thank you, Inaya, for your amazing work!

Mehr: We recently received some feedback that you have been supporting your peers during speech and drama lessons. Thank you for being a tuakana and showing great leadership. It's wonderful to see you sharing your knowledge and helping others succeed.

Milan: Over the past couple of weeks, we have noticed the effort you have been putting into your writing. You understand your learning goals and are beginning to take ownership of your work. We're very proud of your self-motivation!
